1780s Twining Vines Border

Machine Embroidery Design for 1780s Twining Vines Border

This design is based on a sketch for muslin embroidery held at the Victoria & Albert Museum, E.246-1973. It is one of two designs for petticoats or open gowns, dated to the 1780’s. These designs were professionally drawn and used by professional embroiderers, who sometimes also lent the patterns out to clients. It is part of the same collection of drawings as RR123, the Wisteria Garland Apron.

Two versions of this file are included, the full border as well as the vines and scallops as separate files. This design is perfect for a wide range of late 18th and early 19th c. designs. Please see the period examples on our Pinterest page of scalloped borders for inspiration.

Color changes are included to allow you the option of creating a cutwork border and openwork eyelets for the edge of the fabric. As well, there are color changes for the vine and flowers, to allow you to stitch the design in multiple colors if desired. Samples have been stitched in cotton thread with a cutwork edge on sheer cotton.

We make every effort to ensure that our machine embroidery designs evoke period hand embroidery techniques, and are well-researched so you can use them with confidence on your historical costuming projects. They may copy the wobbles or slight flaws in an original design, to help keep them from looking too perfect and modern. They may contain details that you are not used to seeing in modern machine embroidery designs, such as more color changes or jump stitches between areas. All our files are accompanied by a detailed description of the original design as well as stitching instructions and thread recommendations so you can get the most out of these designs.

You will receive a detailed PDF along with the digital files needed to stitch out this design on a wide variety of embroidery machines.
