Description

This charming bow tie will add a pop of color and interest to a basic Edwardian shirtwaist, but pairs equally well with modern blouses and cottagecore dresses. This design for a “dainty collar bow” is based on one advertised in the April 1912 edition of The Modern Priscilla. It features a cutwork edge surrounding a floral motif, with buttonholes at the center through which a velvet ribbon is threaded.

Black velvet ribbon is always a safe choice, but this design is charming with bright colors such as “lavender, green, or cerise.” All of the samples were worked in white linen, but it is suggested that they could also be worked in colored fabric to match a shirtwaist or dress. While not specifically mentioned in the original article, they are also lovely stitched in colored thread on a white ground.

Please Note: This design is intended to be made “in the hoop,” meaning the collar bow is complete and ready to wear after removing from the hoop and washing out the stabilizer. Please read the PDF instructions closely if you are unfamiliar with how our cutwork designs are trimmed and stitched.

We make every effort to ensure that our machine embroidery designs evoke period hand embroidery techniques, and are well-researched so you can use them with confidence on your historical costuming projects. They may copy the wobbles or slight flaws in an original design, to help keep them from looking too perfect and modern. They may contain details that you are not used to seeing in modern machine embroidery designs, such as more color changes or jump stitches between areas. All our files are accompanied by a detailed description of the original design as well as stitching instructions and thread recommendations so you can get the most out of these designs.

You will receive a detailed PDF along with the digital files needed to stitch out this design on a wide variety of embroidery machines. The PDF includes a detailed description of the original gown, color changes, embroidery instructions, and full color designs.

Hoop size: These designs will fit in 4×4″ hoops or larger.
