Giveaway – “Fashion from the Frame”

I recently stumbled across mention of an exhibit at the Bavarian National Museum titled “Mode aus dem Rahmen,” or Fashion from the Frame, focusing on “precious embroidered clothing of the late 18th century.”  Naturally, I wanted to learn more – and see some pictures!

I did find the museum website, as well as a blog post that has a few pictures published with permission of the museum. In particular, this court suit intrigued me, because it is so rare to see larger garments from any era, and I’d never seen one quite like this.

The exhibit sounds like just my thing, since it focuses solely on embroidery and the late 18th century, two of my favorites. However, I’m not going to make it to Germany in the next year, so I needed a way to bring the exhibit here.  They do have a museum catalog, but it appears to be sold only by the museum and they only ship to addresses in Germany. Luckily, I was able to get some copies shipped to me, and they were certainly worth the effort!

It’s 68 pages of loveliness, with color photos on almost every page and more than a dozen full page images.  There is a nice selection of waistcoats and suits, including quite a few uncut panels of waistcoat embroidery. A few photos even show the back side of the embroidery, which we don’t often get to see. At the center of the book is a detailed account of the restoration of an embroidered court gown, with multiple views of the gown, the embroidery, the layout of the pattern pieces, and much more.

I’m more pleased with it than I had hoped.  I’m even more pleased that I have an extra copy to give away to one of you!  Enter below by leaving a comment with a link to an embroidery design from a period magazine, extant garment, portrait, etc. that you would love to see reproduced for machine embroidery. Earn extra entries by signing up for our newsletter and by checking out our Facebook and Pinterest pages.

Bonus! If you sign up for the newsletter, you’ll get a download link for a machine embroidery file for this 18th century button once your subscription is confirmed.

  • Your work is an inspiration!! I look forward to seeing all of the new and exciting things that come “from the workshop”!

  • I am so intrigued and fascinated by your work. Everything you do is fabulous. Thanks so very much for the chance and for the button file.
I can’t wait to try it!

  • I love what you are doing. Now to get lost in your blog. :0)

  • Than you for the button pattern, I’m sure I’ll be wanting more of your designs soon, I need to plan some projects that can use them.

  • Yay, books! I’m absolutely loving what you’re doing! Thanks for your hard working making these beautiful old designs accessible to people today!

  • I love your work, the pocket I bought is so beautifully made.
I don’t have a specific embroidery pattern off the top of my head, but I would love to see some silver thread embroidery, for a man’s court suit, stomacher or even for some 18th century shoes!

    • Kim, my next project involves some silver thread work, and I’m hoping I can figure out how to use the best combination of threads + machine stitching to make it look as much like the real thing as I can. I have some Japanese threads that look promising, but need to test them.

  • Yes please! I love what you do and you’re seeerrriously tempting me to buy an embroidery machine just so I can use your patterns!

    • Lauren, my evil plan is to get everyone to own an embroidery machine! Haha, not really, but I do want to help make it possible for more people to use embroidery on their costumes.

  • some whitework to fit in a 4×4 hoop.

    • Loretta, we have a few things in the shop that fit in a 4×4 hoop, and we should be adding more borders in between some of the bigger projects. Thank you for letting me know there is interest in more of those!

    • I love those mitts! More accessories like that are definitely on my list.

  • I love the look of white work on Edwardian clothing. I would like to see some small, square embroidered medallions that could work well with entredeux and lace insertion in blouses, or connected together to create inset strips similar to the skirt pictured on the left of this linked picture. http://www.augusta-auction.com/component/auctions/?view=lot&id=12556&auction_file_id=27

    • Oops! I meant the skirt on my “other” left… (the one on the right!)

  • Thank you for the free button link, so pretty! I love small details like that. I think something art nouveau would be wonderful to reproduce with a machine. I’m sorry I can’t figure out how to link on my iPad.
